Ride Safe, Arrive Smart: Your 60‑Second E‑Scooter Safety Guide
3 things that keep you safe
- 🪖 Helmet – protects your brain (mandatory in many EU countries)
- 💡 Lights – front, rear, signals. Be seen by everyone
- 🗺️ Road rules – bike lanes, speed limits, local laws
That’s it. The rest is details.
🪖 Helmets: When & why
- Mandatory for all riders in Italy, Spain (€100 fine), and soon more
- Mandatory for under‑16s in Austria (from May 2026), Poland
- Recommended but not required in Germany, Netherlands, France
What to buy: Look for EN 1078 certification – the European safety standard for e‑scooter helmets. It covers shock absorption, strap strength, and field of vision.
iScooter tip: Even where helmets are “voluntary”, wear one. Most serious injuries happen to the head.
💡 Lights: Be seen or be sorry
Minimum legal requirement in most EU countries:
- White front light (non‑dazzling)
- Red rear light + reflector
- Side reflectors or reflective tyres
- Bell or horn
What’s new in 2026:
- Spain now requires lights on even during daytime
- Italy demands indicators and brake lights
- Austria (from May 2026) requires turn signals and a bell
Your iScooter (i10, iX3, etc.) comes with full LED lighting, turn signals, and brake flasher. Use them – day and night.
🗺️ Road rules across Europe (short version)
Where to ride:
✅ Bike lanes first → then the road → ❌ never on pavements (sidewalks)
Speed limit:
Most e‑scooters are capped at 20–25 km/h. Fine for city riding.
Banned cities in 2026: Madrid, Paris, Prague – no e‑scooters at all.
Basic do’s & don’ts:
- Keep 2 seconds behind others in group rides
- No passengers (unless scooter is designed for it)
- No riding under influence
- Slow down near pedestrians
- Use hand signals + built‑in turn signals
Weather & battery:
- iScooters are IP54 – splash‑proof, not rain‑proof. Avoid heavy rain.
- Cold kills range. Store indoors in winter.
